Sedation Dentistry Q&A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses prescription medication to help you relax during dental treatment. Depending on your needs, it can be administered during routine checkups or more complex procedures.

Many people refer to sedation dentistry as “sleep dentistry,” but that’s not entirely accurate. Sedation makes you groggy, but it doesn’t knock you out. You can still answer Dr. Pierce’s questions or follow his instructions if necessary.

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Anyone who experiences dental anxiety can benefit from sedation dentistry. Dr. Pierce also recommends sedation to people who:

  • Have a low pain threshold
  • Have an extreme gag reflex
  • Have difficulty sitting still for extended periods
  • Need lots of dental work in a single appointment

If you’re interested in receiving sedation dentistry, let Dr. Pierce know when scheduling your appointment.

What are the types of sedation dentistry?

Dr. Pierce offers several types of sedation dentistry, including:

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, causes feelings of euphoria. You inhale it with oxygen through a mask placed over your nose. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so it’s safe to drive home after your procedure.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation requires you to take a prescription drug like Halcion®. On the day of your procedure, you swallow the pill with a glass of water an hour before your appointment. The medication makes you drowsy, so you’ll need a ride to and from Dr. Pierce’s office.

Intravenous (IV) sedation

Intravenous sedation administers medication through a needle and into a vein. The medication bypasses your digestive system, so it works instantly. Dr. Pierce can adjust the amount of sedation throughout the procedure, ensuring your comfort. Following treatment, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home.

What type of sedation dentistry will benefit me?

To determine the type of sedation dentistry that will most benefit you, Dr. Pierce conducts an oral exam and considers several factors, including your age, medical history, and level of anxiety. After gathering that information, he can make recommendations that align with your needs.
